Where in the World Are You?
by Randy Karr
You are visiting a city that boasts one of the world’s
more spectacular vacation settings. The beach you are
walking on, isolated between towering headlands, is said
to be the only beach in the world bordered by an ocean on one side and a sea on the other. On this narrow stretch of sand, you can dip in the chilly, azure Pacific Ocean, and then walk for a few minutes across the beach to the warmer,
turquoise sea. Known as Lover’s Beach, it is located at the
southern tip of a 1000-mile long peninsula, long called “the
forgotten peninsula.” It was once a haven for Pericu Indians
and a hideaway for pirates plundering Spanish galleons.

In
the 1940s, Hollywood stars Bing Crosby, John Wayne and
Desi Arnaz helped turn the once remote fishing village into
a premiere vacation destination by building an exclusive
hotel. About the same time, private pilots flying over the
area reported the waters teamed with fish, especially marlin,
swordfish and sailfish. With hordes of fisherfolks flocking
in, the area laid claim to being the Marlin Capital of the
World. From January to March, whales can be spotted,
some within a stone-throw of surf fishers along the beach.
Visitors’ amenities include scores of eateries, including the
Giggling Marlin, where customers are advised that “if the
food, drinks and service aren’t up to your standards, please
lower your standards,” and the popular Cabo Wabo Cantina,
owned by legendary Van Halen rocker, Sammy Hagar.
Where in the world are you, anyway? Name this resort city,
which is also a popular cruise ship destination, and the sea
on which it borders.
